Chapter 7

The room was quiet, almost too quiet. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as Officers Rebecca Johnson and Nate Norman sat at the small table in the interrogation room, their hands wrapped around hot cups of black coffee. The officer took a deep breath, letting out a slow sigh as she leaned back in her chair. “It’s been one hell of a day, hasn’t it?” She asked, her eyes tired but earnest. Officer Norman nodded in agreement, taking a sip from his own cup before setting it down on the scratched surface of the table.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it,” he replied, running a hand through his short blonde hair and pushing back the slight sheen of sweat from his forehead. His lean build was tense under his worn t-shirt and he couldn’t help but rub at the small knot forming between his shoulders. He glanced over at Rebecca, noticing how her long dark hair fell around her face as she leaned forward, elbows on the table. “You know, this case…it’s really gotten to me.”

She looked up at him, her green eyes meeting his brown ones. There was an understanding there, a bond that they had formed throughout the day that went beyond their professional duties. “It’s tough. Chosen seemed to be a decent guy,” her voice trailed off as she shook her head slightly, trying to push away the image from her mind.

They sat in silence for a moment, each lost in their thoughts as the fluorescent lights hummed overhead. The smell of coffee and old donuts lingered in the air, mixed with the faint aroma of stale cigarettes from outside. The sound of their breathing was the only thing breaking the silence until Officer Norman broke it. “Do you want to grab dinner somewhere? My treat.”

Rebecca hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Yeah, that sounds great.” She stood up, stretching her arms over her head and Officer Norman could see the muscles in her back ripple under her uniform shirt.

Outside, the night air was cool and they walked briskly toward a nearby Italian place. The neon signs flickered above them, casting a warm glow on their faces as they navigated through the bustling city streets. The sound of car horns and people laughing echoed around them, but neither paid much attention as they made their way to their destination. Once inside, they took a seat by the window, the warm light of the restaurant casting shadows across their table.

As they placed their orders, Officer Norman couldn’t help but notice the way Rebecca’s eyes darted around the room, taking everything in—the waiters, the other patrons, even the kitchen staff. He knew she was always on high alert, always ready for anything. When their food arrived, they dug in with the same vigor they had tackled the case earlier. The tangy sauce coated their tongues and the soft noodles melted in their mouths, but neither could seem to shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right…

The sound
